What licence do I need to drive a bus, coach or minibus?
Category D is the main licence category for larger buses and coaches. Category D1 covers minibuses designed to carry up to 16 passengers in addition to the driver, with a maximum vehicle length of 8 metres.
Do I need a full car licence first?
Yes. You must hold a full, valid Category B car or light-van licence before applying for a Category D or D1 learner permit.
What age do I need to be?
You must be at least 21 to apply for a Category D1 learner permit. For Category D, the minimum age is normally 24, or 21 when completing the professional Driver CPC route.
Can I drive on a motorway with a bus learner permit?
No. A learner permit does not allow you to drive on motorways. You must also be accompanied by an appropriately qualified driver and display L-plates.
Do I need Driver CPC?
You generally need Driver CPC if you plan to drive a bus professionally. The CPC qualification includes theory, case study, practical and walkaround test stages.
