Capital Driving School provides motorbike lessons in Dublin for new and developing riders completing Initial Basic Training.

IBT is the mandatory motorcycle training programme for learner permit holders. It combines theory with practical riding skills and must be delivered by an RSA-approved IBT instructor at an approved training centre.

Which motorcycle licence category do you need?

The correct training route depends on your age, learner permit and the motorcycle you intend to ride.

Category AM

Mopeds & Light Quadricycles

Available from age 16. First-time AM learners normally complete the 16-hour IBT course.

Category A1

Motorcycles up to 125cc

Available from age 16 for motorcycles up to 125cc and within the category’s power limits.

Category A2

Medium-Powered Motorcycles

Available from age 18 for motorcycles up to 35kW, subject to the category rules.

Category A

Unrestricted Motorcycles

Direct access is generally available from age 24, or from age 20 through progressive access where eligible.

Your Initial Basic Training programme

The exact IBT modules and total duration depend on the motorcycle category being completed.

Eligible full-licence holders may complete prescribed progression training instead of repeating the full course.

Typical first-time routes: AM/A1 — 16 hours across Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4; A2/A — 18 hours across Modules 1, 3 and 5. Final requirements depend on your permit and previous licence history.

Is IBT compulsory for learner motorcyclists?

Yes. Initial Basic Training is mandatory for new motorcycle learner-permit holders and must be completed before riding unaccompanied on public roads.

How long does IBT take?

The standard first-time AM or A1 course is 16 hours. First-time A2 or A training is normally 18 hours.

Which motorcycle categories do you cover?

Can I ride on the road before completing IBT?

A learner permit allows public-road riding only after the required IBT is complete. Motorways remain prohibited for learner riders.

Can a learner motorcyclist carry a passenger?

No. A motorcycle learner-permit holder is not permitted to carry a pillion passenger.

What protective equipment will I need?

What happens when I complete IBT?

Your instructor records the training and issues a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion.

Can I upgrade to a higher motorcycle category?

Progressive access may allow eligible riders to move to a higher category through prescribed training.
